About Our Guest Speaker: William (Bill) Whitla is Professor Emeritus and Senior Scholar of York University, specializing in the literature and culture of Victorian Britain, but also in medieval and Renaissance studies. He holds graduate degrees in English and Theology from Toronto
and a D. Phil. in English from Oxford, and has lectured in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, and Japan. He published books on Robert Browning, Victorian periodicals, the study of English, critical thinking and writing, Victorian biblical controversies, and most recently, a huge anthology of Victorian Literature. He has also published numerous articles on Blake, Byron, Tennyson, Kipling, and William Morris and was the William Morris Fellow, living in Morris’s own house, Kelmscott House in Hammersmith. He was one of the founders of the William Morris Society of Canada in 1981. He has lectured on Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts art and architecture. He wrote the libretto for a Christmas cantata by William Westcott, The Beasts at the Manger, premiered in 2002, as well as the libretto for a new opera, Frankenstein with music by Canadian composer, Andrew Ager. And he lives just two streets away from Baby Point on Evans Avenue just south of Annette.
